Stage One: Granules wear away leaving smooth or dark patches and dirt like substance in gutters. Loss of these granules expose the asphalt to sunlight which makes it brittle. Now is the best time to re-roof. |

Stage Two: More bare spots appear and get larger in size. Shingle tabs may start to curl. Re-roofing becomes more urgent. |

Stage Three: Tabs become brittle and break apart. Chunks of shingles appear in and around gutters. Water may leak through areas such as exposed nail heads. Re-roofing becomes difficult, repairs need to be made first. |

Stage Four: Damage is severe, leaks are almost certain. Re-roofing is no longer possible, the roof must be evaluated and likely redone from scratch. |
